Assisted reproduction
Assisted reproduction is the collective name for fertilization methods taking place partly outside of the body. The two most important types of assisted reproduction are insemination, where sperms are handled outside of the body, and IVF, where both sperms and eggs are handled outside of the body.
Partner insemination
Insemination may be an appropriate treatment for inexplicable infertility or if the couple struggles with completing intercourse. The woman usually undergoes hormone stimulation to optimize ovulation. The man’s sperm is prepared and inserted into the womb with a thin plastic catheter.
IVF is a possible next step if insemination is not successful.
